SME Panel: Economic Integration and Convergence with EU Policies

The 4th Panel on SME Policy — which was hosted by the Lithuanian EU Presidency — took place on November 26—27, 2013 in the run-up to the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius.

BFC Partner, Senior Bank Advisor and Analytics Expert Peter Hauser, presented the findings of the study which concluded that the SME funding environment is improving over time but that some gaps (such as the agriculture and rural gap, the local currency gap, the literacy gap, the accounting gap and the collateral gap) remain. Also, the private equity sector is still in the nascent stage of development and there is growth potential for non-loan products such as leases and letters of credit.
Following these presentations on access to finance a lively discussion ensued which demonstrated that access to finance still is one of key barriers to SME development in the Eastern Partnership region. Many SMEs are not aware of funding available and do not know where to find relevant information.
